Brush
Like a Pro
Brushing is the single most important habit for a healthy smile — and there's a right way and a rushed way to do it.
Here's how our hygienists teach it.
Pick the Right Tools
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush that fits comfortably in your mouth. Both manual and electric brushes work well — the electric option can help if you tend to press too hard or miss the same spots. Choose a fluoride toothpaste that has the ADA Seal of Acceptance.
Angle Matters
Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle to your gum line. This is where plaque loves to hide, and a proper angle helps sweep it away instead of pushing past it.
Use Short, Gentle Strokes
Brush in short back-and-forth or small circular motions. Cover the outer surfaces, inner surfaces, and chewing surfaces of every tooth. Don't scrub — gentle, thorough strokes work better and are kinder to your gums.
Brush for Two Full Minutes
Split your mouth into four quadrants and spend 30 seconds on each. Most of us cut brushing short without realizing it — a timer or two-minute song helps.
Don't Forget the Tongue
Give your tongue a light brush at the end. It reduces bacteria and freshens your breath.
Replace Your Brush
Swap out your toothbrush (or brush head) every three to four months — sooner if the bristles look frayed.
